In this case,
through the efforts of Dan Thayer, the soy and corn oil used
to fry our foods is no longer just headed a landfill when
it's depleted. Thayer, of Levering, Mich., converts our oil
into diesel fuel which delivers 25 mpg.
"I just started it about a month ago using the old, spent
oil from Scalawags," he said, referring to the four Northern
Scalawags restaurants. "I get my oil free from them.
"Then I use a machine called an Azure, from the bio diesel
company in Sully, Iowa, to convert it into diesel fuel. By
the time I'm done, I've got it down to about $1 a gallon."
Brian Parker, Scalawags' franchise owner, is pleased that
his string of restaurants contribute to recycling, rather
than just discarding the oil in landfills. "Every little bit
helps and this will help us go green with our end product.
We hope others take Dan's example and run with it."
